Treason & etc.

Given what I understand of the Oregon situation, these men are committing an act of armed rebellion, and under the precedents established as far back as George Washington’s presidency, are guilty of treason and should be treated as traitors. They have crossed a line regarding the right to peaceful protest that should not be ignored, and definitely not be encouraged. There is a difference between free speech/right to assemble and armed provocation.

The genesis of the Oregon situation lies in an esculation of a disagreement involving dangers to public lands through the actions of private ranchers, Dwight Hammond and his son, Steven. These are not guiltless people. They were convicted of setting fires in 2001 and 2006, for destroying public property through arson. The fires were set on land managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The Hammonds leased grazing rights for the property from the BLM.

Witnesses at trial (2001), including a relative of the Hammonds, testified the arson occurred shortly after Steven Hammond and his hunting party illegally slaughtered several deer on BLM property. Jurors were told that Steven Hammond handed out ‘Strike Anywhere’ matches with instructions that they be lit and dropped on the ground because they were going to ‘light up the whole country on fire.’ One witness testified that he barely escaped the eight to ten foot high flames caused by the arson. The fire consumed 139 acres of public land and destroyed all evidence of the game violations. After committing the arson, Steven Hammond called the BLM office in Burns, Oregon and claimed the fire was started on Hammond property to burn off invasive species and had inadvertently burned onto public lands. Dwight and Steven Hammond told one of their relatives to keep his mouth shut and that nobody needed to know about the fire.”

Steven Hammond was also convicted of a fire set in 2006 aimed at protecting his ranch’s Winter feed. That fire occurred in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

“An August lightning storm started numerous fires and a burn ban was in effect while BLM firefighters fought those fires. Despite the ban, without permission or notification to BLM, Steven Hammond started several ‘back fires’ in an attempt save the ranch’s winter feed. The fires burned onto public land and were seen by BLM firefighters camped nearby. The firefighters took steps to ensure their safety and reported the arsons.”

Father and son were, and are, guilty of a basic, selfish disregard for the safety of others, for the wilfull disregard of public safety, and for stealing private privilege from public use. Their protest has no other cause than to prevent their paying for their crimes. Their so-called “Constitution” defense is nothing but window dressing aimed at making them seem like the injured party in the public eye.

And except to say that the italicized portions of this posting are direct copies from other sources, who asked me?

About elrondsilvermaul

I never know what to say about myself. I let what I write try to speak as to who I am. I can only add, here, that I am 72, live in a nursing home, am twenty years a cancer survivor, and identify as a gay male. I intend to use this blog as storage for poems? written over the long years (and still being written). This does not preclude other uses.
